i’m flirting with the idea of getting a used scooter for my commute to work, but i’m not sure what to look for. for example, when buying a used car, i’d be iffy above 100,000 miles – what is the scooter equivalent for that? how many miles can one reasonably expect to get over a scooter‘s lifetime?

Many Vespas can go about 30K miles (with good maintenance). But they are the exception. And they still require lot of “weekend fixing” with that much miles.
Scooters are fairly cheap. Get a new one. If you are not the “grease monkey” type, then any money you save up front will be wasted on visits to the dealer.

Stick with well know brands (like Honda, Yamaha, etc.) Vespa are too over prices in my book.

You’re not going to get one for that price. Look at www.rightwayatv.com and other like sites for a clue to price and what kind of scooter you can get for that price. These sites probably have the lowest price gas scooters around. I don’t know about the quality of the scooters!
