Your Questions About Vespa Scooter

Charles asks…
is a vespa a scooter?
does a vespa qualify as a scooter? if not what does it qualify as? (under 50cc)

Tom Trindell answers:
Vespa INVENTED scooters. I believe they still make a 50cc scooter, but most you see these days are bigger. Honda also makes a 50cc scooter, the Metropolitan, which is styled to look like a Vespa.

George asks…
scooter/vespa lisence,please help! i need info?
PEOPLE LIVING IN THE UK ONLY PLEASE!
im thinking about getting a scooter or vespa, ideally i would like to get a real 60′s mod one!
i need to know some of the following:
how much is insurance?
what kind of lisence would i need?
how much money would i be spending on it monthly roughly and what for?
how easy/hard are they to drive/ride!?
do i have to take lessons?
and literally anything else you think i should know (as a complete beginner in the scooter, vespa world) would be massively apreciated!
wow thankyou so much for the help! im falling more and more inlove with the idea and am definitely going to see if i can have a go on some ones to see if it feels right. can you tell me how far you can go when you fill up petrol? i literally have no idea about all this, but i have always loved vespas, especially classic old ones and am just starting to think about making it all a reality!

Tom Trindell answers:
1.) To know the price for insurance it differs from age, gender and the place you are living etc if it the scooter was to be used in London the price of Insurance would be slightly higher. The reason for this is the chances of theft in London is greater.
2.) The License you need is called a learner permit/provisional license. But before you get the license you need to apply for your theory test which will ask you 40 questions to do with road signs etc and you must get 35 right to pass. Once you have passed your theory test you will then receive your learner permit
3.) You will then have to do CBT which is bike training which teaches you how to ride the scooter properly also teaches you how to check the oil level and using your mirrors. You have to do CBT and once you have passed you are then allowed to ride on the road but you must wear an learner vest while you have your learners permit.
4.)The modern vespa scooters come in 50cc the whole way up 300cc but it depends on your age you can only get a 50cc 16 and you can get a 125cc at 17. The modern vespa scooters all of them are automatic meaning they have no gears which are really ease anyone can ride them once you are able to balance them if you are able to ride a bicycle you will be able to ride a scooter.
5.) The classic vepa scooters are two stroke and a bit noiser then the modern vespa scooters but I think they are cool. They are a bit harder to start when they are cold but when you get used to starting them its grand. They have a choke which must be turned on and off once they are started. The modern vespas don’t have a choke they have an automatic one.
The classic vespa scooters have a four speed gear box which has a clutch so this means you have to know how to use a clutch it takes time to learn but once you have learned it will be a lot more fun then an automatic scooter like the vespa.
Is there anything else you need to know: yes Vespa parts are very expensive this is due to wear they are built vespa scooters are built in Italy and due to the labour costs there that is the reason they are more expensive but if you want one get one they are great scooters bought the modern and the classic ones.
Here is the vespa website which has all the vespa scooter range which are available

Best of luck and hope you get sorted out ride safe ![]()

The petrol will last different it compares on how fast you are going the fast the more petrol the engine will use so the scooter will use more petrol. Unfortunately I will have to tell you that you will not be able to test ride the scooters as you do not have a license and even with the learner one some dealers won’t let you test ride on a learner permit. But you can still sit on them in the showroom
There is a company called Lml which is still making the classic vespa scooters with the same engines and everything I am thinking of getting one because I prepare the classic ones but I like the modern ones as well.
If you are 17 you should get an Lml star 125 two stroke there really fun

Joseph asks…
can i keep a scooter that my former roommate left at the house ten months ago?
he moved out at the beginning of january and said that he would pick up his vespa scooter later that month. i called him three times over the following three months and each time his answer was that he would pick it up later that month. i haven’t called him since and he hasn’t called or stopped by to even ask about the bike. is this abandoned property? can i keep it? would i be able to register it in my name? he never gave me a new address to forward his mail to either.

Tom Trindell answers:
Possesion is 9/10′s of the law but i would check with a lawyer first
